Dear 20 something-year-old
The topic of Interest is Overthinking.
One of my biggest struggles as a 20 something-year-old who is bent on being successful is overthinking.
Since I decided on things I no longer want to have anything to do with, my overthinking meter has gone through the roof coupled with the anxiety that comes with it.
If you are a 20 something-year-old reading this and you can relate, let me hear an Aye!
*All hands on deck comrades*
Yes, I am scared of failure in whatever shape or form but then again, isn't failure part of life?
Being afraid of failure and at the same time trying to be in the moment is difficult if not impossible. I am guilty of overthinking or as my roommate will always say “...you think far” but does it help?
From my experience and years spent in the overthinking department, I can tell you that it doesn't. Overthinking robs you of your present, you stop being in the moment when you start overthinking, and by that, you stop enjoying the moment. How else are you going to enjoy the numerous blessings of God if you keep overthinking?
Or do you think you are not blessed? Take a cursory look around, you are alive and that is the greatest blessing because it is the foundation for all other blessings.
There will always be problems, problems of life, problems that are necessary for growth but overthinking has never solved any problems instead it creates an illusion.
The kind of illusion where you think you can't solve the problem which leaves you helpless and hopeless. Now, you think you can't pass your exams, you can't be or do better, you can't be wealthy, you can't serve God better because you are a miserable sinner, you can't do this and you can't do that, all are lies.
You can. So be in the moment, enjoy your time with friends and family, drink your cassava flakes (Garri) in peace because it may not be the case next week, cry if you need to, etc.
Instead of overthinking, figure out ways your problems can be solved. If you can solve the problem, why overthink? If you can't solve the problem, why overthink?
Until I write again, remember we all have problems, how we deal with them is what makes life beautiful or horrible.
